Peat-free substrates at IPM Essen

Van der Knaap Group is one of the largest suppliers of substrates in the Netherlands. For more than forty years, we have supported growers of all kinds of crops with knowledge and experience in the field of rooting and growing media. From 28 to 31 January, you will find us at the IPM trade fair in Essen. Here, we will present innovations in our product range.

From plug to substrate
Van der Knaap supplies a total package of substrate products for every phase of cultivation. For the rooting phase, our product range includes paperpots, Obturo® and Fibre-Neth® plugs. Substrates for the growing phase of cultivation are tailor-made to our customers' requirements. This allows us to offer a suitable solution for a variety of crops.

At the IPM trade fair, we will present a number of innovative concepts. For the propagation of Calluna, we have developed a high-quality cutting and transplanting substrate. Also a very successful peat-free variant. For the cultivation of pot Anthurium, we will also present a totally peat-free cultivation concept: from plug to adult plant. For the cultivation of soft fruit, including blueberries and strawberries, we have an extensive range of coco products. Under the name Forteco® we offer a total concept, from plug to propagation cube to growbag.

Peat-free substrates
Globally, the demand for raw materials for substrate production is increasing. The focus is increasingly on peat-free substrates with a higher share of renewable and circular raw materials. A transition that Van der Knaap Group has been working on for several years. For many crops, we can already offer a 100% peat-free substrate. For the substrates that still contain a proportion of peat, we offer RPP-certified peat.

For years, Van der Knaap has been researching circular raw materials and peat-free substrates in our own innovation centre ‘de Kas’ based on very extensive testing programmes. Safety and good quality of raw materials are paramount. With the knowledge and cultivation experience we have gained, we can support our customers with cultivation advice.

Extensive experience with coco substrates
A renewable raw material that has already proven itself is coco. Coco material has excellent properties, such as a high air content and it easily absorbs water. Van der Knaap has been processing coir in rooting media and substrates for over thirty years. Because we have our own production facilities worldwide, we maintain control of our coir products and delivery reliability. Moreover, this enables us to develop products specifically for various crops and applications.
